King Harbor Sea Fair returns to Redondo Beach, May 18

REDONDO BEACH – The public is invited to attend the King Harbor Sea Fair — a day packed with family-friendly activities and information on boating safety – scheduled for May 18.

The fair will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at King Harbor Yacht Club, 80 Yacht Club Way in Redondo Beach and at the Sea Lab located at 1021 Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach.  A marine expo, local organizations and boat rides are scheduled for the Sea Fair.

The King Harbor Sea Fair strives to educate the public about boating safety while creating awareness of the many local organizations that offer opportunities to enjoy and care for the ocean. Now in its seventh year, the free event includes educational opportunities, crafts and entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. Tallship Irving Johnson will also be docked in the harbor where guests can tour the historic vessel and book passages.

This year, the King Harbor Boating foundation has partnered with SEA Lab to organize the 2014 Sea Fair. SEA Lab, a program of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, that provides hands-on science activities at the science center located in Redondo Beach. The partnership will help to increase the event’s footprint to include all SEA Lab displays, additional partners and allow the fair to stretch from the SEA Lab through the King Harbor Marina parking lot to the premises of King Harbor Yacht Club.

“The goal is to enhance the overall experience by providing more fun and educational opportunities for all Sea Fair visitors,” said Brent Scheiwe, SEA Lab’s program director. “Our facilities offer hands-on coastal science education with touch tanks, fish feeding demonstrations and an amazing interactive water conservation exhibit hosted by the West Municipal Water District.”
Sea Fair co-founder and chairman of the King Harbor Boating Foundation Julie Coll added, “One of our main objectives is to bring our ‘marine neighborhood’ together to educate and inform the community about the many local programs available to them.”

This year’s Sea Fair will be held the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend to coincide with the kick-off or National Safe Boating Week with the U.S. Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary as key partners.

“While the Sea Fair has always enjoyed amazing support from the boating and marine community, we are thrilled at the new opportunities partnering with the SEA Lab will offer,” said Trent Kelly, president of the King Harbor Boating Foundation and co-founder of Sea Fair. “Expanding our reach to encourage the community to enjoy the ocean safely, and in a way that is environmentally friendly, is a cornerstone of the King Harbor Boating Foundation’s core philosophy.”
