Notice to Mariners: August update

CDIP/SCCOOS:
NOAA’s latest forecast model predicts that we are approaching a weak to moderate El Niño year. The Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS) is establishing the infrastructure for long-term, baseline observations.  The SCCOOS funds underwater gliders measuring sea surface temperatures offshore Dana Point.  These observations strongly agree with the El Niño/ Southern Oscillation Diagnostic Discussion.

The Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) provides data on wave models and forecast from our Buoy’s offshore the coastal United States.  Use this URL from your mobile device: cdip.ucsd.edu/mobile.

U.S. Coast Guard:
The San Diego Approach Lighted Whistle Buoy SD is missing from its charted position. The Coast Guard will attempt to recover it on Aug. 6-7 and deliver it to the Coast Guard buoy facility in San Francisco for repairs. The Coast Guard will set a temporary buoy on station until the permanent buoy is repaired and reset. The temporary buoy will not have a RACON or whistle sound signal.

The Coast Guard has established an electronic Automatic Identification System (AIS) aid to navigation marker at the buoy location.  The AIS buoy symbol is displayed on electronic navigation charts at position 32-37-20.192N, 117-14-45.128W. It can be viewed on NOAA’s on line chart viewer on NOAA charts 18740, 18765, and 18772.

Check the date for the latest editions of NOAA nautical charts. For example, the latest edition of Chart 18773 San Diego Bay Edition 43, released May 2012, is correct through Notice to Mariners 07/19/14 and Local Notice to Mariners 07/08/14.  A list of the actual updates is published at the Notice to Mariners Chart Updates.

National Weather Service – San Diego
There is a NOAA Weather Radio transmitter that plays ONLY marine weather related observations and forecasts for the San Diego coastal waters. It is Station WNG637 at a frequency of 162.425 MHz (VHF/WX channel 4). No land-based forecast and observation info will be played on this station.

Mariners are highly encouraged to visit the National Weather Service Enhanced Data Display page (preview.weather.gov/edd/index.php?t=marine) which is a great one-stop shop for marine forecasts and observations throughout the nation. Some of the tools available on this page include: point and click marine forecasts, marine gridded forecasts, web-cams, buoy and coastal observations, marine hazards in effect, and also the new experimental Marine Travel Hazard Forecast tool.
