2016 SCYA Midwinter Regatta dates announced

Participating clubs will hold the 2016 Southern California Yachting Association’s (SCYA) Midwinter Regatta on Feb 13-14, and Feb 20-21. The new two-weekend format for the 87th winter sailing tradition enables host yacht clubs to select the best fit for racers wishing to participate in the regattas.

Jo Ann Sedgwick, chair of the 2016 regatta, has been working closely with SCYA member clubs to ensure all sailors have a wide selection of race venues. Racing for one design and PHRF handicap rated classes are being hosted at yacht clubs from San Diego and as far north as the Channel Islands.

The 2016 Midwinters also offers venues for radio controlled sailboats, Predicted Log Racing and locations for 8-foot dinghies up to 70-foot sleds.

“The Midwinter Regatta accommodates sailors of all ages, experience and all types of boats. This event is for the experienced ocean racer, the dinghy sailor or the cruiser wanting to have a fun weekend on the water,” Sedgwick said. “The regattas are also open to non-yacht club members.”

Historically, the Midwinters is one of California’s largest regattas, with more than 25 venues, 600 boats participating in 100 classes and 2,500 sailors. Skippers have the opportunity to test their skills against some of the best sailors in Southern California. The host clubs work very hard to make this a great event and to showcase what their clubs have to offer to the sailing community.

The SCYA celebrates its 95th year in 2016. In 1921, Santa Barbara YC, Newport Harbor YC, San Diego YC, Los Angeles YC and Los Angeles Motor Boat Club collaborated to create the SCYA in order to provide a communications, educational and organizational assets to the yachting community in Southern California and Arizona.
