Light air prevails in One More Time Regatta

MARINA DEL REY — The wind was not on the side of the 10 skippers who participated in the 40th annual One More Time Regatta last month.

The wooden hull regatta held in Santa Monica Bay, “has seen its share of weather from gale force winds to sideways rain and 8 foot seas but this was the first one in recent memory in which the wind machine shut down after the start of the race,” wrote Andy Kopetzky, a co-organizer of One More Time Regatta.

What started as a clear day with 10 knot winds dropped to an afternoon that only saw 5 knot winds. Lack of wind resulted in the race committee shortening the race down from 13.5 miles to 10 miles. All boats were in by 6 p.m.

Regatta winners included Marjorie, a custom 59-foot ketch skippered by Tracy Obert, sailing the course in less than 2 hours and 35 minutes; Salmo, Larry Beiley’s 25-foot Laurent Giles sloop and Antares, Wooden Hull Yacht Club’s Commodore Steve Guilford’s Kettenberg 40 sloop.

Del Rey Yacht Club hosted the event and held a barbecue and trophy presentation after the event. An auction was also held to benefit the Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation.
