Silent Film Benefit showcases ‘The Phantom of the Opera’

AVALON — One of the greatest horror films of the silent era will be the feature presentation of the 28th annual Silent Film Benefit, Saturday, May 16.

Crowds of silent film aficionados will settle into their seats in the famed Avalon Casino to enjoy an afternoon of watching the classic movie, “The Phantom of the Opera.”

A 26-piece symphony orchestra led by Grammy Award-winning conductor, Richard Kaufman, and soprano vocalist, Lisa Vroman, will accompany the 1925 horror classic.

The film stars Lon Chaney — the man of a thousand faces — as a disfigured madman who terrorizes the Paris Opera House.

Attendees are invited to come in period dress for a chance to win a prize for best dressed individual, couple or character from the film.

Tickets are $20 for museum members; $24 general admission. For more information, and to purchase tickets, call (310) 510-2414 or visit catalinamuseum.org.
