Dave March, founder of WaterCar, successfully steered the amphibious car/ 15-foot boat from the Newport Beach breakwater to the sandy shores of Avalon on Catalina Island during a test run on Jan. 11. It took March 70 minutes to complete the run. “We would have gone faster but had to slow down to keep pace with the yachts accompanying us,” explained Fred Selby, March’s partner. “Also, the last 3 miles were in a very dense fog that reduced our speed to 5 miles per hour.” The 30-mile trip was the first time that March, a boater and owner of Fountain Valley Bodyworks, took the WaterCar out on the water.
