1979: Miss Bud misses speed record, driver survives 200 mph crash

Dean Chenoweth, driver of the Miss Budweiser unlimited hydroplane, survived a crash after the vessel leaped into the air at a rate of 215 mph.

According to the story in the Oct. 26, 1979 issue, Chenoweth only suffered six fractured ribs and cardiac contusions. The boat flipped on its way to a possible record run.
