1983: Newport officials fail to rise to bridge raising question

Boaters were discouraged by the Newport Beach City Councils attitude toward the request to raise the then 47-year-old Newport Channel Bridge, according to a story in the May 6, 1983 paper.

The concrete bridge carried Newport Boulevard across Newport Channel. Several boat owners complained the bridge was too low for most boats to pass under during high tide, often trapping boaters on one side or the other.

The 8-foot bridge would have cost about $25 million to elevate.
