Cabo/Hatteras/Viking Challenge Tournament Ahead

NEWPORT BEACH — Stan Miller Yachts is inviting all owners of Cabo, Hatteras and Viking yachts to participate in this year’s Cabo/Hatteras/Viking Challenge sportfishing tournament, Aug. 16-18. As always, the weekend is designed to offer “great fun, great food and, of course, great fishing,” Stan Miller Yachts announced.

Between 20 and 30 boats are expected at this year’s event. They will compete for top honors for the largest tuna/albacore, yellowtail, dorado, white seabass and broadbill catches, and in a special released marlin category. In addition to three top prizes in each category, there will be prizes for Top Junior Angler and Top Lady Angler, and an overall award for the Top Boat.

This year, anglers who want to begin the tournament in San Diego, instead of at the main starting point in Newport Beach, are welcome to check-in at Stan Miller Yachts’ Shelter Island office at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 16, along with family and friends. Beverages and appetizers will be provided — and there will be team tournament bags filled with T-shirts, hats and numerous other items donated by tournament sponsors.

Check-in for anglers in Newport Beach will be at 5:30 p.m. at Basin Marine — where there will be a kick-off party for team members, their families and friends. All teams checking in here will also receive a tournament bag; and cocktails and a light dinner will be served throughout the evening.

Both locations will have a short mandatory Captain’s Meeting, announcing the rules, regulations and the official tournament VHF radio channel for the weekend’s fishing. “Lines in” begins after the meeting, Friday night.

Saturday will be devoted to fishing — and there will be raffle drawings for prizes throughout the day.

Sunday will also be devoted to fishing, with weight slips to be handed to Nikki or Caprice at Basin Marine between 4 p.m. and no later than 5.30 p.m. As in years past, weight slips may also be faxed in to Basin Marine anytime before the 5:30 p.m. cutoff. and the number will be given out at check-in.

At the close of fishing, the team captain or owner must be in attendance at Basin Marine to receive tournament awards — and raffle prizes will also be handed out at this time. Cocktails and appetizers will begin being served at 5 p.m. with a dinner and awards presentation to follow.
