Chula Vista Bayfront Concept Plans Revealed

CHULA VISTA — The public is invited to take a peek at the future of the Chula Vista Bayfront, with the new release of draft conceptual renderings, according to the Port of San Diego.

Residents have patiently awaited the reveal of the bayfront’s new look, which is part of the port’s and the city of Chula Vista’s plan to transform 500 acres of waterfront property.

The drawings were released for the first time by Ann Moore, chairwoman of the Board of Port Commissioners, at the April 23 Chula Vista City Council meeting.

“These conceptual drawings highlight the incredible potential of the Chula Vista Bayfront as a world-class destination,” Moore said. “We are making significant progress toward realizing our shared community vision.”

The port’s consulting firms, Jones Lang LaSalle and CCI Partners, along with subcontractor HKS UrbanDesign Studio, were present at the reveal.

Plans to develop the waterfront site have been discussed for years. Demolition of the South Bay Power Plant site earlier this year has helped clear the way for the project.

The renderings illustrate the planned balance of commercial development, public access and environmental conservation, according to a statement from the Port of San Diego.

Developed by the port, the city of Chula Vista and property owner Pacifica Companies, the land-use plan to redevelop the bayfront property was approved by the California Coastal Commission in August 2012. Included in the plan are a future resort and conference destination, more than 240 acres of parks and nature preserve, a mix of residential and retail space, an RV park (14 acres), an industrial business park (two parcels, totaling approximately 36 acres) and a buffer zone around the western perimeter (25 acres).

The project is projected to create 7,000 construction jobs and 2,200 permanent jobs, port officials report. It is also expected to generate additional revenue for public services, such as police, fire protection and parks.
