SAN DIEGO – The Port of San Diego unveiled portions of the North Embarcadero on July 1, providing patrons with a glimpse of the project that is nearing completion.

A $31.1 million project that aims to transform San Diego’s downtown waterfront into a welcoming destination for residents and visitors, is scheduled for completion later in 2014. Construction began in January 2012.

The tour provided an up-close glimpse of the progress that has been achieved to date. Those present included Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego), San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, members of the San Diego City Council and commissioners from the Port of San Diego, along with several others.

This joint project between the port, the City of San Diego and Civic San Diego will beautify the San Diego waterfront from the Navy Pier to B Street Pier and creates new public spaces, including a promenade, gardens and public art, according to the port.

The public spaces were open to the public on Fourth of July allowing spectators to catch the Big Bay Boom firework show from the new viewing spots.

“San Diego’s downtown waterfront is a source of civic and regional pride. We’re proud that our investment in this public space is already paying off with a better visitor experience on San Diego Bay,” said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Bob Nelson.

In the next few months, crews will place the finishing touches on streets, median pavers, landscaping and restrooms. Several improvements to Broadway Pier are expected to be ready later this summer. The new public amenities on Broadway Pier will include bench seating, umbrellas and lounge furniture, overlook seating along the railings facing the water, planters and accent lighting.
