SoCal family plans decade-long voyage around the world

OXNARD (AP) — A Southern California family has set sail on what is planned as a decade-long voyage around the world.

On Sept. 19, Nathan and Cindy Walter of Camarillo and their 2-year-old daughter, Grace, sailed south from Channel Islands Harbor in the 38-foot sailboat Reprieve. They are spending time in San Diego before continuing down the coast of Mexico.

The Walters told the Ventura County Star that they are aware of criticism they’ll face for taking along a toddler and a baby that is expected in about six months. But they say many families sail with their children all the time.

They plan to intersperse sailing with periods ashore, avoid dangerous areas and fly to Cindy Walter’s native Belgium for the birth of the baby.
