Sunroad Resort Marina to Reveal Renovations

SAN DIEGO — Sunroad Resort Marina is adding resort-style amenities that will “elevate the San Diego boater experience,” according to managers of the facility, which is billed as a “premier destination marina.”

Renovations began earlier this month and are scheduled to be completed in May. San Diego yacht brokers, boat owners and local businesses will be among those invited to tour the new facilities at a grand reopening celebration, scheduled for May 23.

“If  you don’t have a boat, you can still hold small and large events here,” said Jim Behun, general manager of Sunroad Resort Marina. “It’s really going to be a resort-type atmosphere.”

Guests at the 21-acre facility can enjoy a newly renovated pool and spa area, complete with cabanas and portable fire pits. They can also relax on the deck and watch the latest sporting events on flat-screen televisions.

New grills, a kitchen area and new LED lighting are also included in the renovation. The pool area and the front of the marina have also been opened up, to provide room for large functions, Behun added.

“We are pulling down the fence that we had in front — and we will be putting up some glass, so you will be able to see through to the marina,” he said. “There is a fabulous view of the bay and downtown, making it perfect for weddings.”

Another of Behun’s goals is to bring a small music series to the marina — complete with a floating dock stage.

Renovations have been made to the gym and business center, and to landscaping around the marina. Water and electric utilities have been upgraded to LEED standards.

“Our goal is really to make it look better, and a little more luxurious,” Behun said. “But at the same time, we are trying to make it a lot more efficient — and I think you can do that without losing the resort effect.”

Located at 955 Harbor Island Drive, the marina has more than 600 boat slips from 30 to 65 feet, plus end-ties for vessels up to 120 feet in length. Along with shoreside facilities and amenities, marina tenants also have use of boat dock services that include electrical and freshwater hookups, satellite television and a pumpout station.

The grand reopening also marks the launch of the marina’s small boat program, which offers trailerboaters an opportunity to keep their vessels in the marina throughout the months of June, July and August, and experience all the marina has to offer. The program is geared to boats less than 28 feet in length — and owners can keep their trailers in the marina’s parking lot free of charge while their vessels are kept in marina slips. A one-month deposit is required, at a rate of $13.50 a foot.

“This is an opportunity for trailerboaters to experience what it’s like to have a boat in a marina,” Behun explained. “We want to make boating a fun experience.

“If you’re nor having fun boating, then why do it?” he added.

Sunroad Resort Marina also features free Wi-Fi and ample parking.
