Letter to the Editor: Just What We Need: Another Fee

I see by your story in the Sept. 14-27 issue that our governor is signing legislation to double our boat registration fees by $10, in a plan to pay for new “education programs” to combat the spread of invasive species -- specifically quagga and zebra mussels -- in our state’s lakes and reservoirs.

It’s hard to argue that it isn’t important to fight the spread of these pests. But wouldn’t any money raised through such fees be better spent on direct eradication of these mussels instead of “helpful” brochures and inspections at launch ramps?

It would seem to me that there are much better ways to spend the estimated $4 million to $5 million that this fee increase is supposed to generate.
