Re: State Senate approves Sportfishing Stimulus Act of 2015 (June 4, 2015). Why not include senior citizens in this provision? After all they are the main drivers of fishing in this state.

Opening a window of opportunity for idiots to go beyond their legal limit would be a disaster! Expecting those who already believe they are above the law to donate to some “charity”? Really? I think that fines for over-limit should be double what they are now.

Sensible Fishing License Fees

A couple of things that would be easily implemented here: Re-establishing a fresh/saltwater distinction would go a long way toward more guys buying licenses. I have not fished in fresh water for over 40 years so it seems unfair to have to buy a combined license. Why not go back to the basic license and then buy “stamps” to cover the kind of fishing you actually do? I love the idea of a reduced teenage license. Also, to go to a yearly license, not based on the current year expiration is elementary…we do it with all kinds of license fees right now….do it for fishermen as well.

Cost of fishing too high

I’m 73 years old and it costs about $70 for the wife and I to go fishing anymore. For $70 I can have fish and chips several times and not even have to prepare the meal. They will cook it for me.

Re: Channel Islands Harbor Director to lead state group for second term (June 5 issue). Has anyone from your paper ever been to Channel Islands Harbor? I lived in Ventura County for 15 years, seven of which were on the water at Mandalay Bay in Channel Islands Harbor. Ask anyone who lives, works or unfortunately owns a business there. It is, by any measure, the worst managed public resource in California. Don’t take my word for it. Go see the shuttered businesses for yourself. It’s a disgrace. 5 miles away Ventura Harbor thrives, but Channel Islands Harbor continues to be a blight while Lyn Krieger and her fellow “public servants” levy a 3 percent special harbor tax on the few businesses trying to stay open. Ask her about all the failures. Ask her about the gateway Fisherman’s Wharf that is now a ghost town. If you want credibility as a newspaper, do your homework. The mismanagement of Channel Islands Harbor is legendary in Ventura County.

Chiming in on desalination
On Facebook, two readers commented Re: Poseidon Desalination Plant could negatively impact local fishing (June 5 issue).
Patrick Anthony Thirkell: Why not totally evaporate the water in ponds, and sell the natural sea salt, no return of any water to the sea.
Alex Murray: Because it will not solve the problems of in taking huge amounts of sea life, however, there are solutions. Desalination plants are the wisest course of action right now, but I believe they should be built and managed by the state. Rather than built and operated for profit.

The issue with declining recreational fishing isn’t due to the cost of licenses; this is a revenue problem for Fish and Game-err-Wildlife. The issue is closures and the state’s own general antipathy toward anglers. If they really wanted to boost fishing they’d actually work harder to reduce the by catch of commercial anglers and make sportfishing less onerous overall. Oh, and open up the favorite fishing spots, closed of arbitrary and unscientific reasons.

Who gutted the 12-month license provision and why?

Why can’t anyone disclose who gutted the bill of exactly what we were trying to achieve, that being a 12 month calendar fishing license? Who is the committee responsible for this? This must be exposed so we can start exposing these very poor financial decisions!

Boat people
Re: Can I withhold slip fees during a dispute with my marina? (June 5 issue). Excellent analysis, and greatly appreciated. It’s amusing for a boat home to be compared to a storage unit. Harsh reality, but I still wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
