Four rescued from burning boat off Malibu

MALIBU (AP) — Authorities say four people have been rescued from a burning boat off Malibu.

Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Michael Turanitza said someone aboard the 40-foot boat Dukella made a mayday call shortly before 7 p.m. Aug. 16 after the vessel caught fire about two miles south of Paradise Cove.

Turanitza said a joint rescue involving the Coast Guard and Los Angeles County lifeguards was launched, but another boat, the research vessel Pacific Star, that was about a half mile from the burning boat got to the scene first. The three adults and one child were pulled from a life raft onto the boat.

No injuries were reported.

Turanitza said Dukella, which was en route from Ventura to Marina del Rey, was fully engulfed in flames and sank in 200 feet of water.
