Dredging of Lake Powell boating shortcut underway

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A popular shortcut for Lake Powell boaters is being dredged as the National Park Service capitalizes on the lake’s low water level.

Castle Rock Cut has been closed since February 2013 because of low water. The Park Service hopes that deepening the cut will allow it to be used more often in the future.

Use of the cut shortens a boating route by about 10 miles, which translates into savings of time and fuel for boaters. According to the Arizona Daily Sun, dredging work began Tuesday and will take about four months to complete.

Brown Brothers Construction of Loa, Utah, is doing the work. It involves removing approximately 70,000 cubic yards of material at a cost of $1.6 million.
