Avalon 50-Mile Run Returns Jan. 14

AVALON — The annual Avalon Benefit 50-Mile Run returns for its 31st year Jan. 14. Athletic boaters are invited to participate in this race, which organizers called one of the country’s most challenging and scenic 50-milers. Runners can enjoy the island terrain and sweeping views as they race where the buffalo roam along an interior trail from Avalon to the Isthmus and back.

Runners need to arrive Jan. 13 to pick up information packets at the Landing Grill. A pasta dinner will be available for purchase by race participants.

The race start time is at 5 a.m., and there is a 12-hour cutoff time. The race will start and finish at Crescent Avenue and the Green Pleasure Pier. An awards banquet with food and entertainment is set for 7 p.m., following the race. Banquet tickets are $27.

Race registration is $85. All proceeds will be used to benefit local island charities, youth programs, school scholarship funds and other needy organizations. Runners are encouraged to gather sponsorships for the miles they run.

Race organizers reported 179 participants and 158 finishers at last year’s event.

Online registration is open until midnight Jan. 9, 2012. For more information, visit avalon50.com.
