Avalon’s pre-holiday celebration marks 21st year

AVALON — Visiting boaters and locals alike can get into the holiday spirit at the 21st annual Shop at Home Night on Saturday, Dec. 6, a festive evening that launches Catalina Island’s holiday season.

The event, sponsored by the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, was created to put a spotlight on local businesses and give residents and visitors a chance to purchase island gifts at discounted rates.

This year’s Shop At Home Night will begin with a tree lighting ceremony on the Wrigley Stage at 5 p.m. Santa and his helpers are scheduled to arrive by fire truck.

Avalon merchants will open their doors for a special evening of shopping, with numerous discounts, holiday treats and special attractions. While strolling down Crescent Avenue, shoppers will be entertained by carolers.

A Toys for Tots Toy Drive will be held at the Wrigley Stage. All toys collected in the drive will benefit local children.

A Canned Food Drive is planned at El Galleon Restaurant. Bring two cans of food to get a free photo with Santa from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

During Shop at Home Night, each participating store will have a drawing to give away an in-store gift or gift certificate. Participants who manage to get their “treasure card” stamped at each participating store can enter to win reservations for two for the 2014 New Year’s Eve Gala at the Catalina Casino.
