Blue Water Cruising Club Seeks New Members

BIG GEIGER COVE — Blue Water Cruising Club, the longtime lessee of Catalina Island’s Big Geiger Cove (located a mile east of the Catalina Isthmus), has announced a busy schedule of activities for members this year.

Blue Water Cruising Club, composed primarily of sailboat owners, has a full-time presence at Big Geiger throughout the summer cruising season, as well as planning a wide array of mainland events during winter.

The first summer event is Opening Day at the Island, which is held annually on Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27). Opening Day activities will be combined with a weekend-long celebration of the start of the new cruising season.

The club’s Fourth of July Celebratory Weekend, scheduled in conjunction with the Fireworks Show at Catalina’s Isthmus Harbor, is set for July 4-7. With beach games for young and old, this event is designed to “bring out the child in every Blue Water member and guest,” according to event organizers.

The Blue Water Treasure Hunt — one of the club’s oldest traditions, held continually since the early 1950s — brings out the pirate in every Blue Water Cruising Club member.  Given a series of clues, the “pirates” seek out a treasure buried somewhere in or near Big Geiger Cove. The winning pirate walks away with “booty of great value” and a place in the Blue Water Pirate Hall of Fame. The 2013 Treasure Hunt is scheduled for Aug. 3-4.

Blue Water’s biggest event of the year, held annually on Labor Day weekend, is the Blue Water Cruising Club Luau. The luau celebrates the end of another summer, and is typically attended by up to 150 members and guests.

In addition, the famous Herradura Horseshoe Championship is held during that weekend, with the winner taking home a significant cash prize.

However, members have more cruising opportunities than the club’s “Big Four” events. There are organized parties at Big Geiger Cove every other weekend during the summer.

On “off weekends,” members have informal parties aboard member boats at the cove or use the shore facilities for dinners and barbecues.

Membership in Blue Water Cruising Club is open to cruising sailboat owners and their families. For more information about the club, visit bluewatercruisingclub.org.
