Catalina Museum Silent Film Benefit Set for May 11

AVALON — Movie buffs can get their fill of classic films at the 26th annual Catalina Island Museum Silent Film Benefit, from 1-3:30 p.m. May 11 at the Catalina Casino. With its theme of “Make ‘em Laugh,” the event offers residents and island visitors a chance to enjoy great slapstick comedy films with several of the biggest stars of the silent era.

Attendees are practically guaranteed to get a laugh from these films filled with visual gags, pratfalls, last-minute rescues, chases and daredevil stunts — featuring Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Laurel and Hardy. Each movie will be accompanied by live theater organ music and sound effects performed by Robert D. Salisbury on the Casino’s rare Page organ.

According to the event’s producers, each of the four films chosen for this year’s benefit is considered a “masterpiece of the genre.” This year’s films are Never Weaken (1921), starring Harold Lloyd; The Goat (1921), starring Buster Keaton; Big Business (1929), starring Laurel and Hardy; and The Immigrant (1917), starring Charlie Chaplin.

Movie-goers who dress up in 1920s attire will receive a 50 percent discount off the ticket price. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed individual and couple.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for museum members and children 12 years and younger. Period-dress attendees’ admission is $7.50.
