Catalina Connection

Family fun and nightlife options

ExperienceWhether you are heading to Catalina with a few friends, a significant other or the entire family there are plenty of activities available both in Avalon and around the island.

The Santa Catalina Island Co. offers an Unlimited Fun Day Pass to island visitors for $199 per person.

Included in the day pass are most of the island’s sights and activities, such as excursions on the open-air biofuel Hummer and ocean trips aboard Catallac.

The pass also provides access to the local miniature golf park, a behind the scenes tour of The Catalina Casino, and a trip along Avalon Scenic Drive.

For those curious about the island’s interior the day pass includes trips to the East End and local canyons. A zipline adventure is also available for thrill seekers. Call 877-778-8322 to find out more about the day pass.

One of the newer attractions to the island is the Catalina Falconry Experience at Descanso Beach Club, where you can hold a bird of prey on your hand and learn all about how falcons, hawks and owls live in the wild. The falconry staff is highly educated on birds of prey and will certainly give you insight about some of nature’s greatest flyers. Tours are offered three times per day between Friday and Monday. Tickets are available for purchase at the Green Pier, Tour Plaza, Cabrillo Mole or Zip Line Base Camp.

When it comes to nightlife, most of Avalon shuts down early but there are a few places where you can enjoy the evening with locals.

The Marlin Club on Catalina Avenue is one of Avalon’s most popular bars, though other places to enjoy a drink or two at or after sunset include Chi Chi Club (111 Sumner), Avalon Grille (423 Crescent), Bluewater Grill (306 Crescent) and The Locker Room Sports Bar (124 Sumner).

El Galleon, located on Crescent Avenue, is also open late and features karaoke nights for anyone willing to belt out a few chords. For those less inclined to publicly sing El Galleon’s karaoke nights still offer plenty of entertainment.

Of course the boardwalk itself is a great place for a late night stroll and general enjoyment, especially on warm summer nights. The crashing of the waves and overall peaceful surroundings is quite an enjoyable experience.
