Turkey Day Regatta to be held in Long Beach

LONG BEACH—Alamitos Bay Yacht Club will be spending the final weekend before Thanksgiving hosting the Turkey Day Regatta and competitions for other One-Design classes. Also included in the weekend of racing are Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Association (SCYYRA) Hamlin and Ullman/Frost Series, and 29er and I420 Pacific Coast Championship. The regatta event will be held in Long Beach, Nov. 23-24.

The following ocean course One-Design classes are slated to compete at the Turkey Day Regatta (and other competitions): 29er, 5-0-5, A-Cat, C420, Cal 20, Etchells, Finn, Formula 19, Hobie 16, I420, Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Mercury 18, Optimist, PHRF, Portsmouth (monohull and multihull), Snipe, Thistle and Viper 640.

Bay course classes will also compete in the Alamitos Bay YC regatta weekend. The classes competing here are Naples Sabot (Senior; Junior A, B, C1, C2 and C3), Optimist (Green), Open Bic (Bay) and RS Tera (Bay).

Alamitos Bay YC will be accepting online entries for the race through Nov. 15. In-person entries will also be accepted; those seeking to enter last minute can do so on at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 23. Five pride entries are required to establish a class.

Entry fees for the regatta weekend are as follows: $60 for Bay Classes, singlehanded; $75 for all other Bay Classes; $70 for Oceans Classes, singlehanded; and, $85 for all other Ocean Classes.

U.S. Sailing members are entitled to a $3 discount on fees; juniors younger than 18 years old can receive a $5 discount on fees.

Regatta fees include Alamitos Bay YC’s traditional Turkey Day dinner on Nov. 23, launching, recovery and storage for visiting (and competing) boats.

Registration for the regatta begins at 8 a.m. on Nov. 23. A competitor’s meeting will be held for all classes at the Alamitos Bay YC patio on Nov. 23 at 10:30 a.m.

Nine races are scheduled for Bay Classes and Optimist Gold, with no more than five races on any one day. Ocean Classes have six races scheduled, with no more than three races held on any one day.

The first warning signal will be at 11:57 a.m. on each day of racing. No warning signal will be made after 3 p.m. on the final day of racing.

Bay Class races will take place inside Alamitos Bay, while Ocean Class races will be held at Long Beach’s Outer Harbor.

Prizes will be awarded as follows: one trophy for classes with five boats competing; two trophies for classes with six to eight boats; three trophies for classes with nine to 11 boats; four trophies for classes with 12 to 14 boats; and, five trophies for classes with 15 or more boats.

The Arkie Hauck Cal 20 Perpetual Trophy will be up for grabs in the Cal 20 class. Sailors will also be competing for the Neil Dundas Daily First Perpetual Trophy, which is presented to any Alamitos Bay YC member winning a race at a holiday regatta but otherwise not winning a trophy.
