Newport Harbor deputies later responded in the SAFE boat and again made contact with the vessel operator under way. The skipper initially said no help was necessary, but then made a mayday call about five minutes later. The operator stated the boat was about to go on the beach at Corona del Mar. Deputies gave the operator step-by-step instructions, detailing how and in what direction to sail.
