Dana Point Harbor
April 8 • Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officers initially made a check on the welfare of a crew of three aboard a sailboat off 1,000 Steps Beach in South Laguna. Dana Point fireboat deputies had checked on the boat, which appeared to be in possible distress, in gale warning weather conditions. Newport Harbor deputies later responded in the SAFE boat and again made contact with the vessel operator under way. The skipper initially said no help was necessary, but then made a mayday call about five minutes later. The operator stated the boat was about to go on the beach at Corona del Mar. Deputies gave the operator step-by-step instructions, detailing how and in what direction to sail. Based on the instructions given by deputies, the operator was able to finally sail safely into Newport Harbor. Deputies stayed with the vessel until the operator made it to a local boatyard.

Newport Harbor
April 8 • Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol deputies responded with lights and siren to assist two subjects who were reportedly aboard a boat that sank in gale warning conditions, and were in the water. Both subjects were pulled from the water by deputies, and no injuries were reported. Their 13-foot open powerboat sank and was not recovered.

VENTURA COUNTY
Channel Islands Harbor
April 3 • 2:55 p.m. Channel Islands Harbor Patrol officers received a report of people jumping off the wharf, into the harbor. Two officers responded, and although no one was found in the water, officers discovered an unconscious teenager on the wharf. They provided emergency medical care, and the teen was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

April 6 • 1:20 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received report of a vessel on the beach outside the harbor entrance. Officers responded, pulled the 10-foot vessel off the beach and towed it back to its moorage.

April 7 • 6:50 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received report of a vessel caught in the swim line in the harbor. Officers responded, removed the vessel and took it back to its slip.

April 12 • 8:40 a.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a radio request for a tow from the operator of a 41-foot sailboat. Officers responded offshore and towed the vessel to the harbormaster’s dock.

Ventura Harbor
April 8 • 7:15 a.m. Ventura Harbor Patrol officers responded to a report from the Ventura Marina manager that a sailboat was having jib failure due to high winds. Officers secured the boat’s auto-furling jib.
April 9 • 4:45 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers received a report that a kite surfer was having problems near Ventura Point. He made it ashore without assistance. Officers found his kite floating in the water, recovered it and released the vessel. April 9 • 11:05 p.m. Harbor Patrol officers assisted a disabled vessel to the launch ramp.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
Santa Barbara Harbor
April 5 • 5 p.m. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol officers aboard Patrol Boat #2 responded to a report of a sailboat in distress, 1 mile outside the winter anchorage. Officers towed the vessel safely into the harbor.
