OCEANSIDE (AP) — Border Patrol officials said a disabled boat carrying 12 undocumented immigrants drifted for three days before being spotted near Oceanside Harbor.

Agent Jerry Conlin told U-T San Diego Sept. 4 that the operator of a private boat found a disabled 24-foot Skipjack sportfisher Sept.3 taking on water off the Oceanside coast. Oceanside Harbor Police officers towed the boat into the harbor.

Agents said the boat left Rosarito Beach in Baja California Aug. 31, headed for Long Beach. However, agents said, it developed mechanical problems and the boat’s operator radioed an accomplice for help.

According to agents, the accomplice arrived, picked up the boats operator and told the 12 immigrants aboard that help would be sent.

That help never came.

The four women and eight men from Mexico who were aboard the vessel were turned over to Border Patrol officers.
