San Diego Log Assistant Editor Tom Arnold wrote of a 103-foot submarine docked at the Harbor Police dock on Shelter Island on its way from Vancouver to Mobile, Alabama.

According to the November 1978 story, the diesel electric powered sub, Auguste Piccard, was to conduct research on possible oil drilling sites in the Gulf of Mexico.
