NEWPORT BEACH — We Are Ocean and Villa Pilates & Yoga are inviting the public to enjoy a night of live music, art and cocktails at “Art of Movement,” a fund-raising event for young cancer survivors, June 21.
Designed to inspire cancer survivors and supporters to lead healthy and active lifestyles, the summer solstice celebration will showcase live yoga and local organic food and restaurants from 6-10 p.m. at Cannery Village, 503 31st St.
All proceeds will help We Are Ocean — a nonprofit organization that uses the ocean as a tool to help others overcome challenges and help improve their lives — to send 16 young adults battling cancer to newly established We Are Ocean Survivorship Camps on Catalina Island.
According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 70,000 adolescents and adults ages 15-39 are diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. We Are Ocean intends to teach cancer survivors how to live a healthy lifestyle after cancer treatment through ocean-based sports. Campers will spend their days engaging in activities from yoga to stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and surfing.
“This is a survivorship camp for young adults,” said Danette Dye, secretary for the Board of Directors for We Are Oceans. “The hope is that the group can offer peer support, and then bring additional camps like this throughout the U.S. This will be the inaugural event.”
The event will feature food from Pizzeria Ortica, Haute Cakes Café, Bear Flag Fish Co., Alta Coffee Warehouse and Ritual Wellness.
A silent and live auction will also be held, hosted by three-time Olympic swimmer Aaron Peirsol. A Paddle2Live paddleboard package and a weekend getaway at the Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach are among the items to be auctioned.
RSVPs are required. Visit facebook.com/joinweareocean to reserve your spot.
Tickets can also be purchased for a suggested $20 donation at the door, or in advance at Villa Pilates & Yoga; (949) 673-6800.
