Coastal Commission to weigh in on Redondo Beach’s harbor redevelopment

The California Coastal Commission released the agenda for its April meetings in Redondo Beach and revealed it would host an informational public hearing on redevelopment of King Harbor. Updating the Redondo Beach waterfront has been making headlines recently, as a local developer’s plans to execute a redevelopment project became the subject of a rezoning push via ballot initiative and legal battle in state and federal court.
A Superior Court judge in Los Angeles reportedly ruled Coastal Commission should determine the applicability of Measure C to CenterCal’s Waterfront project. The Coastal Commission won’t make a final decision on the CenterCal project until August, multiple news reports indicated.
CenterCal Properties proposed building a multi-million dollar development at King Harbor. The project called for visitor-serving and boater amenities. Local residents challenged the proposal, however, when Redondo Beach voters approved Measure C in 2017; the approved ballot initiative challenged CenterCal’s plans, forcing the El Segundo-based developer to take the matter to court.
Commissioners will host the informational hearing on April 12.
The commission’s April meetings will be held April 11, 12 and 13 at Redondo Beach Public Library, 303 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach, California 90277.
