Port Extends Marine Group Boat Works' Lease

SAN DIEGO — The Port of San Diego announced that it has signed a lease extension with Marine Group Boat Works LLC in Chula Vista.

Marine Group Boat Works is a family owned, full-service boat and superyacht repair facility that specializes in the fabrication of government and commercial vessels.

Through continued negotiations, the port and Marine Group Boat Works agreed to a lease term extension for an initial 10 years with an additional 11-year option to extend. The option to extend would be triggered if all of the qualifying conditions imposed by the port were completed.

Qualifying conditions include the relocation of a large fabrication building to open up views on the site to San Diego Bay, creation of a habitat buffer zone and implementation of a plan to accommodate off-street employee parking.

“This lease extension is a culmination of the hard work and energy our team, community and the port has put into preserving marine-industrial use, so that we can continue meeting a special niche in boat repair and construction,” said Todd Roberts, Marine Group Boat Works vice president. “It allows us to continue signing new agreements with customers and sustain important jobs for county residents. We couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The lease extension also includes provisions to complete aesthetic improvements to the leasehold. Marine Group Boat Works has agreed to cooperate with future adjacent developers to improve the appearance of the boatyard so that it will be compatible with nearby developments.
