Pacific Cup Racer Michaela Draper to Speak Sept. 11

Byline: The Log Staff

MARINA DEL REY — The Women’s Sailing Association (WSA) will welcome WSA member and Pacific Cup racer Michaela Draper as its September speaker of the month.

On Sept. 11, Draper will talk about her sailing adventures and show pictures of her team sailing in this year’s San Francisco-to-Hawaii Pacific Cup race.

Attendees will hear about the adventures of Draper and her crew, who spent 13 days and traveled 2,500 miles aboard Buzz Off — a 30-footer. Draper will discuss the ups, the downs, the good, the bad and the ugly, and will share stories of surviving with no kitchen, no head, eating freeze-dried food and sailing with a mixed crew, according to WSA.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 with a social hour, no-host cocktails and a hosted dinner, with the meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m. Draper is scheduled to speak at 8pm.

WSA meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, 13589 Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey, adjacent to Burton Chace Park. Parking is free.

Guests are welcome to attend at no charge for up to two meetings. To obtain entry into the parking lot, drive up to the gate, press the call button and state that you are a guest of WSA.

WSA of Santa Monica Bay is a nonprofit organization that promotes women in the sport of sailing. Membership is open to both men and women, and no previous sailing experience is necessary.

The association offers many sailing and social opportunities, including day sailing with boat-owning members at no additional cost, cruises to many local destinations and racing clinics with racing instruction in the classroom and on the water.
