Zac Sunderland to Speak at NB Museum, Nov. 15

NEWPORT BEACH — The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum is welcoming solo circumnavigator Zac Sunderland Nov. 15 as its guest speaker, as part of its ongoing Waterman Lecture Series.

Sunderland, who became the first person under the age of 18 to sail solo around the world in 2009, will speak about his many adventures during his trip. During the 13-month cruise, he encountered storms, modern day pirates, and the lonely life of a solo circumnavigator.

The museum’s Waterman Lecture Series highlights the stories of nautical explorers, historians, seafarers, authors and adventurers from all over the world.

“Zac Sunderland characterizes adventure in a rare form — the youngest to complete a solo circumnavigation,” said Newport Harbor Nautical Museum president Rita Stenlund. “Our intent with presenters like Zac is to communicate a more adventurous feeling and appeal to a broader audience.”

While his presentation at the museum will focus on adventures aboard his 36-foot sailboat Intrepid, Sunderland recently participated in the 19th season of the television reality series, “Amazing Race,” in which Sunderland teamed up with his father, Laurence Sunderland, against other teams in a race around the world. They were eliminated in sixth place out of 11 teams in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Zac’s sister, Abby Sunderland, also attempted a solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2010. She was forced to call off her attempt after her boat was damaged in a storm in the Indian Ocean.

The event is scheduled to run from 7-9 p.m. Nov. 15 and is free for Newport Harbor Nautical Museum members. Non-members can attend for $15. Those planning to attend should RSVP by calling (949) 675-8915 or sending an email to rsvp@explorocean.org.
