Anglers speak in favor of Helgren’s remaining in Oceanside Harbor

What Happened: The fishing and boating community turned out in support of Helgren’s Oceanside Sportfishing during a Sept. 21 Oceanside City Council meeting.

Several people spoke in favor of Helgren’s Oceanside Sportfishing being awarded the lease asking the City Council to allow the business to stay in the harbor.

Helgren’s Oceanside Sportfishing currently holds the lease, which is now up for bid. The city issued a Request For Proposals (RFP) in late summer.

Sea Star Charters, Chubasco Sportfishing and Pfledger Institute of Environmental Research (PIER) answered the RFP with a plan to convert the landing to better serve both sportfishing enthusiasts and those interested in marine education. The new landing would be renamed Oceanside Sea Center.

City Council held a closed session discussion on the item.

What’s On Tap: The city’s lease with Helgren’s expires on May 5, 2017.

  • That landing has been mis-managed far too long since the founder died. The wife and children have destroyed that place – they need to go
