‘Ready, Set, Wear it!’ events remind boaters to stay safe on the water

STATEWIDE — Boaters and water aficionados are invited to join in one of the many events planned during National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27.

The “Ready, Set, Wear It!” campaign jumpstarts the week on May 21 with an attempt at setting a new world record for the most lifejackets worn. Events have been scheduled worldwide for participants to gather to help set the record for the most life jackets worn and the most inflatable life jackets inflated.

The event, sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) and Canadian Boating Council, serves as a fun educational element just prior to National Safe Boating Week. Each year, organizations host “Ready, Set, Wear It!” events to help educate the boating public about the safety benefits of life jackets.

The number to beat is 10,917 participants, a record set in 2015. Japan has the highest number of participants at a single event with 811 people in attendance. More than 30,000 people have participated in the event since 2010, according to event organizers.
