Wooden Boat Festival brings classic vessels to Newport Beach

Balboa Yacht Club to host the free annual event on June 4.

NEWPORT BEACH — Wooden boat aficionados will once again have an opportunity to spend a day admiring classic makes and models during the third annual Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival, June 4.

Experienced boaters as well as novices will come together to enjoy a day filled with maritime craftsmanship during the event scheduled from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Balboa YC, 1601 Bayside Drive.

Up to 50 of the “most unique wooden power and sailboats in the country” will be on display both on the landside and in the water, according to the event’s organizers.

A featured attraction at this year’s event will be Wild Goose, once the pride and joy of actor John Wayne, who converted the former WWII mine sweeper in to a 136-foot pleasure yacht. Also not to be missed will be the 55-foot, 40-ton authentic Chinese junk boat, Mei Wen Ti.

An awards ceremony to honor Best in Show (Perpetual Trophy), Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat, Best Human-powered Boat and People’s Choice Award winners is scheduled for 4 p.m.
