SAN DIEGO — A U.S. border inspector suspected something fishy about a truckload of white seabass headed into San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico. And that hunch proved to be correct.

Smoked Seabass – A total of 708 pounds of marijuana were found hidden in a truckload of fish being transported from Tijuana to San Diego.

Customs and Border Protection reported Jan. 22 that authorities seized 708 pounds of marijuana stowed under the fish.

An officer at the Otay Mesa border crossing ordered the truck driver aside Jan. 21, requiring that the cargo be subjected to X-ray examination. Afterward, authorities said they found 29 wrapped packages of marijuana hidden beneath the fish and a layer of ice.

The driver was a 34-year-old man from Ensenada, whose name was not immediately released. He was booked into a downtown San Diego jail, pending investigation of a charge of attempted drug smuggling.
