NEWPORT BEACH – American Legion Yacht Club is launching a new race. The Whale Regatta, a sanctioned PHRF ocean race commemorating the annual migration of whales along the coast, is set for March 27.

Sailors will test their skills on a point-to-point course that will begin in Alamitos Bay approximately 400 yards west of Oil Island Chaffee and end in Newport Beach. Navy Yacht Club of Long Beach will start the race and American Legion Post 291 will host the finish and a trophy presentation at 6 p.m.

The fleet will be divided into cruising and spinnaker classes. Regatta organizers hope to attract many sailors who are Vietnam War veterans. Post 291 is sponsoring a Vietnam Veterans’ Welcome Home Party on the day of the race.

Entries for the regatta will be accepted until 5 p.m. March 23. The entry fee is $20.
