LOS ANGELES – A Westchester family has established a scholarship in memory of Peter McGonigle Wenner, a collegiate sailor who was killed last month in a boating accident.
The Peter “P.J.” McGonigle Wenner Scholarship will assist students attend Loyola High School in Los Angeles, the teen’s alma mater.
Born the middle child of four boys to Peter and Susan Wenner, the younger Peter Wenner discovered his passion for sailing at an early age. The avid sailor began sailing at California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey. He excelled on the club’s junior racing team, where he received the Zimbert Sportsmanship Award and was elected junior commodore. In high school, Wenner joined the Loyola Sailing team.
In 2007, Wenner began studies at the University of Hawaii. Once there, Wenner joined the school’s sailing team, earning a spot on the varsity team as a sophomore.
On Nov. 8, he was sailing an Aussie 18-foot skiff with the varsity sailing team when the boat capsized, trapping Wenner underwater. With his harness caught in the netting of the trampoline, the 19-year-old was unable to free himself from under the vessel. He had been underwater for 15 minutes before teammates and coaches could free him.
Despite rescuers’ attempts to revive Wenner, he slipped into a coma. Physicians later determined that he was brain dead, and Wenner was taken off life support Nov. 11, according to the Torrance Daily Breeze newspaper.
His sailing accomplishments include finishing fifth at the Pacific Coast Conference Sailing Men’s Singlehanded Championships, sixth at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sloop National Championship in Forth Worth and sixth, competing with the University of Hawaii’s co-ed team, at the Pacific Coast Conference Sailing Men’s Singlehanded Championships in San Diego in September.
