MARINA DEL REY — Boaters hitting the water here on Labor Day weekend will be reminded about the importance of responsible boating by a 14-foot-high, 36-foot-long floating billboard, Sept. 5-7.

Message to Mariners – A floating billboard in Marina del Rey will remind boaters to “Dump at the Pump” and keep the harbor clean.

The California Department of Boating and Waterways will launch the on-water public service announcement during the busy boating weekend in Marina del Rey. The floating billboard with the message “Let’s Be Clear: Dump at the Pump,” sponsored by the state of California, will be towed through the harbor by boat.

Billboard Boats Inc. (BBI) designed and supplied the floating billboard, with the intent of reaching boaters in their own environment. The billboard base is retrofitted with a small netting device to collect surface debris and trash, to keep the harbor clean.

According to BBI, this will be the first time a floating billboard has appeared in Marina del Rey.

The Department of Boating and Waterways program focuses on increasing the availability and use of pumpout facilities and dump stations, to eliminate sewage discharge into California waters and encourage environmentally sound practices.
