Editorial: Anti-Fishing Activists Attack Tackle

posted: 5/10/2012

Remember when PETA came out with its campaign calling for people to refer to fish as “sea kittens,” in an effort to make them seem cute, cuddly and somehow worthy of protection against seafood lovers and anglers? People laughed, but few took PETA seriously in this effort.

Letter: Boater Focus Is a ‘Copper Cop-Out’

Todd Jeffries  |  posted: 5/10/2012

Once again, boaters seem to be the main (and only) focus of the major effort to rid San Diego Bay of its copper deposits.

Editorial: A Cure for Which There is No Problem?

posted: 4/26/2012

Two brand-new studies of water quality in Shelter Island Yacht Basin indicate lower levels of dissolved copper here than had been seen in previous research. In addition, the new studies show that levels of copper in the water are actually low enough that they are not toxic to most marine life.

Letter: Three Cheers for Whale Rescuers

Marcia Pringle  |  posted: 4/26/2012

The effort put forth by the marine mammal rescuers, all the boaters who helped out, and everyone else associated with these rescues was both admirable and inspiring.

Editorial: Starting the Season Right

posted: 4/13/2012

The Newport Boat Show returns for its 39th year April 19-22, and if you’ll pardon a slight bias on our part (since our parent company produces this show), we believe it signals the start of boating season in Southern California much better than the traditional Memorial Day holiday weekend does.

Letter to the Editor: Our Tax Dollars at Work?

Vic Larson  |  posted: 4/13/2012

Your editorial and news story in the last issue about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service paying Massachusetts fishermen not to fish in an experiment they call a “survey” was downright frightening.

Editorial -- Here's $500: Don't Go Fishing.

Eston Ellis  |  posted: 3/29/2012

A new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Service “study” that’s now under way in Massachusetts has generated a lot of comment from anglers across the nation.

Letter to the Editor: Let's Outlaw NIMBYism

Bernice Long  |  posted: 3/29/2012

The city of Newport Beach, acting on the complaints of a neighbor about a backyard boat construction project, passed an ordinance in 2009 that prohibits “long-term” construction projects of more than six months’ duration in the backyards of private homes throughout the community. Evidently, enforcement is quite selective, because many home improvement projects that add a new kitchen, a home theater room or an extra bedroom take far longer than six months to complete.

Editorial: Don’t Take OUR Boating Funds

posted: 3/14/2012

As most boaters know, Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed the elimination of the California Department of Boating and Waterways, and he wants to move the department’s functions and responsibilities to the Department of Parks and Recreation. However, what nobody knew until March 7 was that there’s also a call for eliminating the loans the department currently provides to build and improve boating facilities across the state -- using the Harbors and Watercraft Revolving Fund, paid for by boaters.

Letter to the Editor: Support Fish and Game Commission President Dan Richards

Bruce Rollins  |  posted: 3/14/2012

Dan Richards, president of the California Fish and Game Commission and a consistent advocate for sensible science-based conservation and the rights of anglers in California, is under attack -- and he needs our support.

Reader Rant: The DFG Budget: Is Anyone Out There Paying Attention?

Jim Matthews  |  posted: 3/1/2012

Do you know someone who has quit hunting or fishing in California in the past decade? We all do. I like to say that fish and wildlife exist today in California despite the Department of Fish and Game (DFG), not because of its efforts.

Letter to the Editor: Do Boat Barns Bring 'Factory Farm' Concept to Boating?

Del Cooper  |  posted: 3/1/2012

At both Dana Point Harbor and Marina del Rey, planners are talking about constructing large boat storage and launching facilities that are frequently referred to as “boat barns.”

Reader Rant: Moorings Didn’t ‘Fail’ in Santa Barbara -- Connecting Components Failed

Brian Hylland  |  posted: 2/16/2012

The main focus of The Log Newspaper’s Feb. 3-16 issue article (“Santa Barbara Moorings Reportedly Have Trouble Staying Put”) is regarding Seaflex moorings there and the “failures” they are experiencing. However, to this day, there is not one single piece of evidence that has shown a Seaflex product failure.

Letter to the Editor: Remembering Sailing Legend Martin Luray

Gordon and Mimi Glass  |  posted: 2/16/2012

“News Briefs” in the Jan. 6-19 issue contained an item about Susan “Charlie” Arms of the California Maritime Academy being named Boating Educator of the Year for California by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.
