Editorial: Starting the Season Right

The Newport Boat Show returns for its 39th year April 19-22, and if you’ll pardon a slight bias on our part (since our parent company produces this show), we believe it signals the start of boating season in Southern California much better than the traditional Memorial Day holiday weekend does.

What other early spring event gets so many boaters — power and sail — out of the house and down to the docks? This rare opportunity to step aboard, take your time and compare the unique features of nearly 200 of the West’s newest boats and spotlessly maintained brokerage yachts is simply irresistible to most boaters.

Some boaters already have the boat of their dreams, but they come to the show to look for ideas and accessories to make their upcoming boating trips more fun. Others are in search of a new boat, and they will see many eye-catching models here to add to their wish lists.

You won’t find a bigger or better selection of midsize-to-large yachts in the water anywhere else west of the Mississippi — and there will be lots of gear, accessories and essential boat services on display, too.

Say what you will about the current economy, but marine financing rates have not been lower anytime in recent memory. And there have never been so many attractively priced boats available immediately, or so many marina slips available for berthing those new boats.

Whether you come to buy or just to look, there will definitely be a lot to see — and, in our opinion, it’s a great way to start your spring boating season out right.
