Letter to the Editor: Selling Off History?

Byline: Linda Treat

I see by your story “Titanic Artifacts Headed to Auction,” in the Jan. 20-Feb. 2 issue, that all those historically significant items that were removed from the “unsinkable” ship’s watery gravesite in the depths of the North Atlantic are now going to be put on the block and sold to the highest bidder.

There’s something that seems quite distasteful and disrespectful about that — although, presumably, the passengers’ remains will not be dredged up and sold along with their belongings.

Interesting, though, that the news article mentions the same company that is selling the Titanic treasures also sponsors “Bodies,” a traveling exhibition of preserved human cadavers.
