DPYC kicks off Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta

DANA POINT — For the next five months, Dana Point Yacht Club will host several boating-focused events all leading up to the annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, Sept. 12 to 13. The first event kicking off the regatta is the Dinghy Poker Run/Casino Night on Saturday, May 30.

Boaters are invited to spend the day in their dinghy with family and friends during the poker run, which begins at noon; a skipper meeting is held at 11 a.m. Participants pay $25 per hand and spend the afternoon cruising to five identified locations around the harbor. Additional cards can be purchased for $10 at the time your hand is revealed. A purchase of four hands gets you into Casino Night later that evening at 6 pm, along with $250 chips.

Prizes for the top three hands will be rewarded at Casino Night.

Participants are reminded they are gambling for a good cause.

Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta co-chair Michelle Sanders said club – and non-club – members look forward to the happening each year. “It’s extremely popular,” she said. “It’s a day of family fun on the water.”

For several years, Dana Point YC hosted the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta over a four-day period in September. This year, the club broke away from the original schedule and spread events out over a five-month span leading up to the regatta.

Each year the regatta benefits a specific organization; this year the Dana Point Harbor Youth Foundation is the beneficiary of all the series events. The foundation raises funds to support youth sailing and water-related activities in Dana Point Harbor.

“Sailing is more than a recreational activity,” Sanders said, “it promotes leadership, and builds self esteem.”

Dana Point YC hopes to raise $100,000 for the foundation.
