SDYC hosts CUBAR kickoff dinner, May 30

SAN DIEGO — The biennial power boat cruise CUBAR Odyssey is on the horizon and boaters are invited to join in the events leading up to the November cruise to Baja, Mexico. An informational kickoff dinner will be held May 30 at San Diego Yacht Club for all interested in the cruise.

More than 40 first-time cruisers and veterans alike will participate in the 2015 CUBAR – Cruise Underway to Baja Rally – and there are still spots available. For those who still have questions, the dinner is the perfect way to get answers and meet fellow cruisers.

The dinner will provide key dates, anticipated ports of call, registration information and criteria specific to the cruise. Representatives from the Mexican Tourism Board and experts on marinas and immigration will speak at the event.

A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the dinner with all proceeds benefitting the San Diego YC Junior Program. Participants are coming from as far as Australia, Vancouver, British Columbia and Phoenix, Arizona, to take part in the rally that is scheduled to run from Nov. 11 to 23.

After the May kickoff dinner, two days of training and orientation to power boat cruising in Mexico will be held to cover everything from immigration processing, cooking on board, navigation, long range cruising tips, first aid and cruising in the Sea of Cortez, according to the club.

Founded by Bruce Kessler in 2007, the CUBAR has been held at yacht clubs throughout California and is now a permanent event at San Diego YC. All funds raised from the CUBAR go directly to the San Diego YC junior program. The event also includes a donation of 100 laptop computers to various schools and social organizations in Baja, an exchange junior sailing program with the Ensenada Junior program and a clothing drive for the smaller fishing villages that cruises will visit on the trip.

The last day to register for the dinner is May 26. For more information or to register, visit CUBAR.org.
