Snipe Fleet 24 hosts Wooden Dinghy Race

MARINA DEL REY –Classic wooden boat owners participated in Snipe Fleet 24’s Wooden Dinghy Race on June 4 where more than eight vessels battled it out on the water.

The first of the two-part race was held at L.A.’s MarinaFest in Marina del Rey where racers started on the course’s starting line near Burton Chace Park. From there, they sailed to a rounding mark just before the breakwater and back to the finish line at Burton Chace Park.

Katawampus, a home built 1963 Snipe, took the line honors as first and will be the first on the newly established perpetual wooden dinghy sail trophy. The Sontina Scow, Rosie Ann, took second; Teejaroo took third place; Aspara took fourth, and Wee Too took fifth.

The second race will be on July 24 during Old Fashioned Day in the Park in Marina del Rey. Race organizers hope to expand the non-racer class boats for the next race, and add more on- design racing classes.
