Father Goes to Mexico in Search of Missing Sailor

Byline: Associated Press

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — A Florida father is in Mexico trying to find his adult son, who went missing during a cruise that began from California’s Dana Point Harbor.

The Naples Daily News reported 43-year-old Donn Pinkney Jr.’s sailboat washed up empty on Mexico’s west coast in late February.

Pinkney’s father said his son is an experienced sailor and doubts he fell overboard. Donn Pinkney Sr. worries his son was the victim of foul play.

The U.S. State Department in Mexico City said it is aware of the disappearance and has been facilitating meetings with local law enforcement.

Donn Pinkney Jr. departed from Manzanillo on Feb. 20 en route to a destination about 270 miles south. Five days later his boat washed ashore. Everything on board had been removed when it was found.

The sailor’s friends have started a website — searchfordonnpinkney.bbnow.org — to draw attention to the case.
