Catalina spreading island style holiday cheer
AVALON― If the most wonderful time of the year has you itching for a getaway from the mainland madness, Catalina Island will get you in the holiday spirit with a slew of upcoming events.
On Dec. 5, visitors will be invited inside the Inn at Mt. Ada, the former Wrigley Family mansion, during the holiday open house. The open house runs from 2-6 p.m. and tickets cost $5. Cookies, drinks, music and Santa Claus will also be part of the festivities. Taxis will run continuously from the Tour Plaza to Mt. Ada from 1:45-6:30 p.m. Rides cost $2 each way. On Dec. 7, the city is hosting an afternoon and evening of entertainment, shopping and holiday cheer at the 26th annual “Shop Catalina.” The event runs from noon to 8 p.m. and features holiday shopping with in-store prize drawings at participating shops, a community tree lighting with Santa on Wrigley Stage at 5 p.m. and costumed holiday carolers. Visitors will also be able to exchange a canned food item for a photo with Santa at Antonio’s Cabaret. There will also be an opportunity to win two reservations to the 2019 New Year’s Eve Gala at Catalina Casino.
Shoppers in search of handmade gifts and homemade treats can visit Overlook Hall where the Christmas Bazaar and Craft Fair will be taking place Dec. 7 and 8. Visitors to Overlook Hall on Dec. 7 will also be able to watch the Fifth Annual Catalina Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Local non-profit groups and local businesses entering on behalf of a designated charity are invited to participate. There is no entry fee. Decorating will run from 2-3:15 p.m. followed by judging. Judging will be based on originality, visual appeal, and best portrayal of a Christmas theme and/or the organization’s mission. Cash prizes will be awarded to three non-profit winners and the trees will be auctioned off from 3:30-4 p.m. For more details about registering for the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest, contact Overlook Hall at 310-427-2450.
