Chuck Byron Fish On! Event Scheduled Sept. 22-23

SAN DIEGO — This year’s Chuck Byron “Fish On!” anglers’ and artists’ event is scheduled Sept. 22-23.             The event, in its eight-year history, has raised thousands of dollars to support the Chuck Byron Youth Art Program and the youth fishing programs of Friends of Rollo.

“Through this support, we are able to educate and change the life of our upcoming artists and anglers by putting them on the water to learn the ‘art of fishing,’” explained director Lori Byron-Sachau of Chuck Byron Youth Art Inc. “Our goal is to encourage the next generation to get out there fishing and learn to appreciate our oceans — and as adults, they’ll contribute their knowledge learned from experiences we are able to provide.”

This year, the event’s fishing tournament has changed: The San Diego Rod and Reel Club is sponsoring a day of fishing on Saturday for the biggest yellowtail and dorado. A side pot is also available. The club has opened its September tournament to the public at a low cost of $30 per angler, and kids under 16 are free.

First- through third-place cash prizes will be paid out based on the total number of signups. So, the more anglers that participate, the more money the top anglers will win.

A special prize will be given to the top youth angler, so club members and nonmembers alike are encouraged to bring their boats, their kids and their friends to fish on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Fish On! 2012 luncheon awards banquet/fundraiser will be hosted at the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island. “The recent winners of the Fish On! Youth Marine Art Contest, along with anglers from the San Diego Rod & Reel Club fishing tournament held Saturday, will all gather and have fun raising money to continue connecting young creative minds to our marine resources,” Byron-Sachau said.

If you aren’t fishing but enjoy art, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to view and own an original piece of art donated by some of the West Coast’s top marine artists and several local artists, Byron-Sachau said. These works, along with original artwork from the event’s participating youth artists, will be up for bids in the Fish On! auction.

Custom fishing rods from top makers, short- and long-range fishing trips, resort stays, jewelry and many other items will also be offered on the raffle table and auction venue.

Tickets are priced at $25 per guest and include a South Pacific luncheon served outside by the water’s edge, under the Hawaiian Village Pavilion. The facility is sponsored by the Bali Hai Restaurant/Bauman family.

Luncheon tickets will also be available at the door at noon Sunday.
