Development Sought in National City Marina Area

Byline: The Log Staff

NATIONAL CITY — Requests for development bids have been sent out by the Port of San Diego to parties interested in leasing and developing land in the National City Marina District.

The land being considered is located on 32nd Street, near Pier 32 Marina and the National City Marine Terminal at 1400 W. Bay Marina Drive.

The recommendation comes after a year of collaboration between representatives of the Port of San Diego and National City, one of the port’s five member cities. The Board of Port Commissioners approved the plan at its January meeting, and National City Council members approved the issuance of a solicitation on the same date.

“Both the port and National City are committed to collaborating on a framework that will protect and preserve maritime uses, enhance communication between the two agencies and lead to a vision plan that will benefit the public, National City and the port,” read a statement released by the port. “Maritime and maritime-related operations are a primary function of the Port of San Diego, and the growth of maritime trade is a priority.”

According to the Request for Qualifications, the port is seeking interest from real estate development firms looking to develop the available acreage in the area.

Submissions are due by Aug. 21. Selected developers will be expected to conduct a public outreach program, and should expect to prepare and implement an outreach program to address city officials, community groups, environmental groups, the San Diego Port Tenants Association and other groups.

Recent projects completed between National City and the port include the 246-slip Pier 32 Marina, the restoration of Railcar Plaza and Santa Fe Historic Depot, remediation of the Marina Gateway Hotel site and restaurant sites, extension of Marina Way and streetscape improvements.

State and federal grants assisted with the environmental remediation and restoration of Paradise Marsh, adjacent to Pier 32. More than $65 million worth of improvements have been completed or are in progress in the Bayfront/Marina Gateway Area.
