Cruisers’ Event Series Planned in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Downwind Marine will host a series of cruising seminars, get-togethers and special events, to coincide with the traditional start of Mexico cruising season.

The series will begin at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 18 with an eight-hour intensive training seminar on SailMail at Point Loma Assembly Hall, 3035 Talbot St., with Sue and Jim Corenman and Shea Weston. The cost is $50 per person; $75 per couple. For details, visit

A Marine SSB Radio Training seminar is scheduled from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Downwind Marine, 2804 Canon St.. Gordon West and Shea Weston will offer installation and operation tips and techniques. The cost is $25 per person; $30 per couple.

Boaters can enjoy a Welcome Baja Ha Ha Party Oct. 20 at Downwind Marina. A barbecue for all is planned at the back of the store from noon to 4 p.m.; and a Welcome Potluck Party is scheduled simultaneously for Baja Ha Ha participants.

A series of evening cruisers’ seminars is planned at the “back door” at Downwind Marine from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 22-26. Topics tentatively scheduled include: Oct. 22: Cruising Mainland Mexico, with Harbormaster Dick Markie of Paradise Village Marina in Puerto Vallarta; Oct. 23: Charts — Past, Present and Future, with Capt. Ann Kinner of Sea Breeze Books, Charts & Gifts; Oct. 24: Mexican Liability Insurance and International Health Insurance — What You Ned to Know Before You Go, with DeAnne Amancio of Rowcliffe Insurance and Arno Chrispeels of; Oct. 25: Outboard Motor Care, with Tom Teevin of Aquarius Yacht Services; Oct. 26: Preparing for Heavy-Weather Sailing, with Bruce Brown, of Bruce Brown & Associates.

The annual Downwind Marine Cruisers’ Kickoff Barbecue Party is set for noon-4 p.m. Nov. 3 at the back of Downwind Marine. Hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas will be available for all; and a Cruisers Meet and Greet Potluck Party will be held simultaneously for this season’s cruisers.
