Haunted Birch Aquarium kicks off Oct. 23-24

SAN DIEGO – Ghouls and buoys of all ages are invited to spend a safe and “spirited” Halloween learning about ocean science at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.

The entire family can discover what lurks beneath the ocean’s surface at the 15th annual Haunted Birch Aquarium: Shipwrecked Science, 6-9 p.m., Oct. 23-24.

Everyone can participate in hands-on science activities, meet spooky species from the deep sea, explore the aquarium’s “wreckage” for sunken treasures, BOO-gie down with zydeco band Billy Lee & the Swamp Critters, and enjoy close encounters of the fishy kind.

Splash! Cafe will remain open until 8:30 p.m. with a variety of selections including ghoulishly gourmet sandwiches and salads, nightmarish nachos, and howling Halloween sweets.

Haunted Birch Aquarium will be a fun and informal atmosphere to learn about ocean science. Scientists from Scripps Oceanography will be on hand to meet visitors and demonstrate their research.
